Kim’s Convenience

I would like to thank Pacific Theatre in Vancouver for giving me complimentary tickets in exchange for my review.

Kim’s Convenience should be considered a Canadian treasure at this point.

With the incredible success of the televised series on CBC, I felt as though it was important for me to see the stage version of which the show is based.

Written by Ins Choi, there is so much going for it. The brilliant acting, the storyline of immigrants finding their success in Canada, the multiculturalism and family relations, the point is really driven home; we all have our own stories to tell. The play revolves around Mr. Kim, a Korean Father of two and loving husband who runs his own convenience store in Toronto, Ontario.

The audience gets to experience Mr Kim’s ups & downs, comedic banter and his strained relationship with his Son, Jung.

I laughed, I cried and I wholeheartedly felt that many people could relate to this very Canadian story.

Janet, Mr. Kim’s daughter is an aspiring photographer who grapples with the fact that the store may be her imminent future which leaves her with a bit of anger towards her father, who proves that he has done so much for her.

Being such a huge fan of the show, I really felt that this experience was part of my true fandom experience.

The television show is another thing that I would like to strongly advocate for, it’s on CBC (and Netflix) and has run for two seasons. Season three is coming up in January and I can not wait. My Boyfriend and I were first in line at the fan screening in Calgary.

You’ll see us 8-9 seconds in.

I also was overjoyed to see Paul Sun-Hyung Lee, Mr. Kim from the TV Show joining us for the performance at the theatre.

I was so lucky to receive tickets* to experience Caravan World Rhythm’s Che Malambo which is an Argentinian All-Male Dance group.

With their overwhelming talent, expert choreography and ability to entertain the crowd, the show was a memorable masterpiece.

Their footwork was a mix of riverdance paired with flamenco and tango. Truly a unique experience! I really enjoyed the humour and singing as well as the impressive tricks they performed by whirling boleadoras – a percussive lasso. It was electrifying. To me, I felt it was very elemental. They resembled a growing flame and a powerful hailstorm.

They will be performing 3 nights in Florida followed by NY & NH.

OMIGOD You Guys, Align Entertainment Presents LEGALLY BLONDE is A HIT!

The story may be familiar as it is based on the 2001 film of the same name! Elle Woods is a sorority girl who decides to attend Harvard Law School to win back her ex boyfriend, Warner Huntington III. She meets Emmett, her Professors’ Teaching Assistant and they quickly become quite chummy. Defining herself as a perfectly capable – and intelligent woman, who just happens to like pink–she learns quickly and helps her new-found Esthetician, quirky Paulette, get her dog back. That small victory was just the beginning. Later in the play she exercises her direct nature and new found knowledge to win a murder case by proving Exercise Queen Brooke Windham innocent of all charges.  Along the way Elle’s three friends Margot, Serena and Pilar keep things interesting with their musical numbers and comical interjections.

Julia Ullrich dazzles as the bubbly Elle Woods (surprisingly enough I had seen her as Veronica in Fighting Chance Productions “Heathers: The Musical” where she was absolutely incredible), She powerfully commands the stage.

I have to say, the casting is spot on and all the characters perfectly play their roles. The music is catchy with the “OMIGOD” song carrying you throughout the play.

The choreography and sets were perfectly executed, creating an almost dreamlike ambiance. The orchestra gave me goosebumps, there’s nothing quite like experiencing live music! I was super impressed with the attention to detail which was incredibly pleasing both in a visual and auditory fashion. I have enjoyed Broadway shows and can tell you that the amount of talent on the stage is transcendent. It is the perfect escape!

This marvellous adaptation of the feature film runs from February 2 to the 17th with tickets starting at $27! $15 special pricing on February 12th for Family Day.
